An adventure in the woods.

Set in the misty forests of Tofino with a small guest list of close family and friends, I wanted to capture the romanticism and whimsy of a forest wedding. After doing the initial interview, I learned that they wanted guests to instantly feel welcomed to a wedding in the woods. I went to my favorite antique store in Ocean Beach to search their paper ephemera for pieces about vintage American family travel. I picked up vintage maps and postcards that were the perfect starting point to get ideas.

Elegant adventure is out there!

Knowing they wanted an elegant, romantic feel, I designed their wedding logo with lots of sweeping curves and varying line widths. There were a lot of moving parts to the invitation suite including: an RSVP postcard, a weekend itinerary, and luggage tags. I drew inspiration from the vintage souvenir folders (folded booklets of postcards to send while on holiday) I found to organize all of the cards. A lot of the wedding motifs were using a bronze, rose gold, so I decided that important elements of the invitation would be hand embossed in bronze powder.

Finding an emerald, forest green cardstock with a smooth texture is apparently pretty difficult. After searching far and wide, we settled on a darker teal paper and used a more rose gold embossing powder for contrast. Once I got the non-embossed pieces together, it was time for the hard part. And, as with most DIY printing adventures, this hand embossing technique was far more complicated than I had originally expected. The handheld heat gun used to activate the embossing powder was less agreeable with the paper than I would have hoped. But a few small household fires and sleepless nights later, they turned out better than I would have expected.
